"Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially
for animals who are suffering, for any that are hunted or lost or deserted
or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death. We entreat all
Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of
compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to
be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful."
~Albert Schweitzer
Pet of the Day
Available pets from Broken Road Rescue will be featured as the pet of the day on

Over the past year we have learned the dog pounds, humane societies and animal control facilities are overcrowded. These pets are being euthanized simply because there is no room for them. We work with area animal control personnel and foster as many dogs and cats as we can. Over the past year we have saved over 200 animals in our small organization. Below are a few stories of our fostered pets.

Forrest the Foal
Forrest was born with contracted tendons and could not stand to nurse.
When making a donation to help Forrest, please include his name so the money
will go directly toward his care.
We attended the Deer Forest Petting Farm auction in late September. We were
able to purchase (Thanks to wonderful donations from the best people in the
world) 4 donkeys, and a mare and her yearling colt. After getting them home and
vetted, teeth floated and farrier trims- we are happy to report that the four donkeys
and the mare all have been adopted into great homes. We couldn't be happier with
these adoptions. What love and prayer can do. Thanks to everyone who donated
to this auction. It is comforting to know they sleep well and are loved and happy.

fact, he is a favorite and follows us around and loves to come into the barn to be
Leeta had to have some extra care since
her mouth was in such poor shape. The
equine dentist said her mouth was the
second worst he has seen in his career
and he travels 5 states! She had one lower
molar that had grown up into her top jaw
and was abscessed. She had a big
infection in her mouth and sinus area. Her
halter had also grown into her face. Happy
to report she is fine now, no more infection
and just gaining weight and being loved.
She gets to run free and come into her own
stall every night. Her colt (now gelding),
Alfie is also doing well. He plays with 14
other horses, runs in a huge pasture and
also comes into his stall every night. At the
Our rescue saves horses, ponies and
donkeys from auctions headed for slaughter.
To help raise funds for our rescue, we also
save unwanted dogs and cats from the animal
control facilities in the area. We take all
breeds of dogs and cats, young and old,
healthy and sick. They are taken to our vet to
be spayed or neutered and given all
vaccinations and heart worm tested. If they
are heart worm positive we get them treated.
We foster as many as we can in home
environments and advertise on Pet Finder, go
to pet stores for adoption events, and take a
pet on TV, WLNS Ch 6 (Lansing) each
Tuesday for The Pet of the Day. Those
interested in adopting must go through an
application process. Our goal is to place the
pet in the best home that will keep them for
the rest of their lives. We also state in our
contract that the pet comes back to us in the
future if something should happen and that
new owner can not care for the pet any
longer. We never want our animals to have to
worry for their lives again.

worked. He needs a great
home. The donkeys all had
trust issues, and such bad
overgrown feet, but after just
a few weeks of gentle
handling, they have also
become pets.
Forrest continues to grow and develop his legs so he is now able to walk on his
own. He wears a large dog harness so he can have help getting up if he falls. Our
vet takes x-rays of his legs often to make sure they are developing correctly.
Please consider being a sponsor for Forrest and help us help him to grow into
the beautiful horse he will soon become.
